Mexico Liability Cruisers Policy

March 21, 2018

Did you know that yachts in Mexico must have local liability coverage? This type of yacht liability insurance (in addition to your regular liability coverage) covers property damages and bodily injuries to third parties. Even if your U.S. policy includes extended coverage in Mexico, the Mexican authorities may not recognize it as valid.

Most Mexican marinas require proof of this coverage to even dock or moor your vessel; if you don't have it, your vessel could be seized! Under Mexican statutes, there is a minimum liability coverage limit required. If your coverage is not provided by an insurance agency registered with the Mexican Department of Insurance, you may encounter serious difficulties in Mexico.

Beyond the possibility of incurring out-of-pocket liability for third-party occurrences, penalties for not having this required coverage can be severe, which may include possible fines or imprisonment.
